Two years into a bioengineering PhD, Zara Darcy decided to “master out.” It’s not an uncommon thing for a student to do, but the reason Darcy chose to is. The Texan left to focus on adult content creation.
Why would someone on a PhD track make that choice? For starters, Darcy realized that she wasn’t enjoying the role she found herself in. She was in more of a professorial role where she oversaw graduate student work, offered feedback and secured funding as opposed to more hands-on research that she would’ve preferred. And in the cutthroat academic world, she knew it would be difficult to find something else.
“I realized that even after completing a PhD, I would likely find myself in a similar position as I would with a master’s degree; overqualified for entry-level jobs but lacking industry experience,” The 25-year-old recently shared in an interview.
“Professors and teachers aren’t as respected or compensated as they should be, considering the huge impact they have on shaping minds and advancing fields,” she added. “It’s frustrating to see how undervalued they are, especially when a lot of them are working under a lot of pressure with low pay, constantly fighting for funding and dealing with bureaucratic hurdles.”
So Darcy chose a different path for herself. She created two pages on the subscription-based platform OnlyFans: one where she offers free academic lessons and one where she charges for content that is “artistic and erotic with tasteful nudity.”
But even the free academic content has “a hot twist to keep things engaging and fun,” she explained. “I started by sharing quick science facts on Instagram as short videos, discussing topics like the Leidenfrost effect and Schrödinger’s cat,” she says. “I cover various topics, from math and STEM to personal growth, but I like to present them in a way that’s both approachable and playful, mixing education with a little bit of spice.”
The content creator joined the platform in 2022 while still in her PhD program. She was also trying YouTube, posting similar content on both platforms to see what worked. And to her surprise, OnlyFans began promoting her videos on their login page. She began focusing on creating more content and as they say, the rest is history.
It didn’t hurt that the money started rolling in as well. In just a few months, Darcy made over $50,000 from her content. For a time she juggled both content creation and her PhD program, but ultimately made the decision to stop and earn her master’s degree.
“Many people assumed I completely abandoned STEM because of OnlyFans. However, I use my knowledge in ways that feel more meaningful to me — whether that’s making educational content with my own twist, researching topics that interest me without academic constraints or finding creative ways to blend STEM with erotica for my OnlyFans,” she explained.
