Poems working for justice! Well, we can use all the help we can get to even begin to address the injustices 2025 has brought forth. Or maybe don’t blame the calendar year; just turn your gaze toward Trump’s gilded lair.
La Mama’s series The Poetry Electric has a good track record, having presented more than 200 emerging poets from diverse backgrounds, bringing together music, movement, sound, dance, and the spoken word. This year’s Social Solstice for Peace and Justice will be hosted by William Electric Black, aka Ian Ellis James (seven-time Emmy Award–winning writer for his work on Sesame Street), and will feature poet Jane LeCroy; performance artist and poet Filip Marinovich; writer and composer Maggie Dubris; poet and artist Jeffrey Cyphers Wright; poet and writer David Mills; writer, poet, and singer Malikah Marie Stafford; and artist, poet, and actress Lilo (Alyssa Martinez).
It’s been a tough year for hope and humanity. As you are uplifted by poetry, you can also, as La Mama’s email invite proclaims, “Hug your friends! Raise a toast!” It can only help. ❖
