If you are like me, you spend a lot of time talking about all the cultural things New York has to offer but never actually partake of them. Now is your chance to get a musical fix in an environment other than a bar or club. The third annual MOVING PATTERNS festival at the Austrian Cultural Forum has DJ events, film screenings, and musical performances. While the first night was on the 26th, the festival continues Wednesday through Saturday. Thursday night looks to be a highlight, with a screening of the ski cult flick White Noise and a performance by Gustav (singer Eva Jantschitsch, just try and say that out loud; I dare you). The night is capped off with experimental electronic-music producer Waldeck and his new jazz-influenced project Saint Privat. Wednesday through Saturday @ 7 & Thursday @ 8, Austrian Cultural Forum, 11 E 52nd, 212-319-5300.
The city’s rezoning proposal for the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area isn’t sitting too well with the neighborhood’s residents who don’t like the prospect of skyscrapers lining the currently undeveloped waterfront. TV on the Radio, Dragons of Zynth, Turing Machine, Apollo Heights, Roxy Pain, and Tha Pumpsta with Chief Quievie join forces for REZONE THIS! Join them in their fight. Thursday @ 8, Club Exit, 147 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, 718-349-6969.
Miss Kittin might have a cute DJ moniker, and she might look like you could pet her and she’d purr, but she’s a tough broad her music is as ballsy as it comes (see “Requiem for a Hit” on her record I Com). While I’ve only seen one of her pretty amazing DJ sets, I’m sure she’s even more captivating as a live performer-expect her claws to be out. With guest DJs Bubble and Cowboy Mark. Thursday @ 10, Rothko, 116 Suffolk, 212-475-7088.
