Things We Hate–Steak Fries


We’ve all had the experience–you order steak frites or a hamburger with fries, and when the plate finally arrives, gee, the steak or burger looks good, but it’s heaped up with “steak fries.” Ugh! This perverse french fry variant involves cutting the potatoes much thicker, so that the interior turns to grainy mush, and the outside, well, the outside seems to never be crisp or even brown. One suspects they were invented by steakhouses that lacked the wherewithall to produce fresh fries on demand, and so decided to cook them up in big batches ahead of time and let them fester, lukewarm, before being served. Give us freshly cooked conventional fries any day of the week.
