Though the new, icky comity in the state senate has obviated a lot of court actions brought between the parties over the last month, the Espada-deprived Republicans are still fighting Governor Paterson’s Wednesday night appointment of Richard Ravitch to the lieutenant governor’s office. They insist the job was unconstitutional, despite the parsings of Paterson’s Delta Force legal team. The GOP got a TRO to stop the appointment around midnight on Wednesday, which Paterson craftily evaded by swearing him in at the Peter Luger Steak House in Williamsburg around dinnertime, before the Republicans could drive to Nassau County and get a friendly judge to sign. The Republicans claim it’s still bogus and GOP senator George Winner suggests Paterson should be impeached for doing it. State Supreme Court Justice William LaMarca has adjourned the Ravitch case until Wednesday afternoon, leaving the former MTA boss several days to figure out what he’s going to do now that he’s not needed to save the senate anymore.
Oh, and in case you were concerned: yes, the state senators are collecting paychecks again, and getting a long weekend.
