In the hills of California’s Bay Area, the Oakland Hills Tennis Club hums with activity. Tennis players of all ages and skill levels work to refine their games, guided by Lada Baglaeva‘s innovative leadership. As the club’s racquet sports director, Baglaeva has made it her mission to reshape how tennis players are trained, combining traditional techniques with modern, player-focused strategies.

“Tennis is more than just a sport, for me, it is my life. It has shaped me into the person I am today,” Baglaeva shares. “My lifelong mission is to spread awareness of the sport, regardless of age, whether for kids or adults, because tennis can change lives.”

Her journey from being one of Australia’s top junior players to a leading figure in tennis development is a testament to her determination and vision. Baglaeva is committed to creating opportunities for players and challenging outdated methods to make the sport more accessible and inclusive.

Becoming a Tennis Mentor

Baglaeva’s tennis journey began in Australia, where she trained under Geoff Masters, a former Grand Slam champion and a prominent figure in Australian tennis. Under his guidance, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the nation’s second-ranked junior player. Her dedication and talent earned her a place at the prestigious Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in France, a training ground for world-class athletes.

“Being a student-athlete at Mouratoglou allowed me to be surrounded by incredible coaches and mentors,” Baglaeva shares. “It forced me to mature quickly, as I had to navigate life away from my family starting at 14. The connections and friendships I built at the academy made me realize that tennis is more than just a sport, it is a lifestyle.”

Baglaeva’s mentorship under former ATP World No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny was key in shaping her approach to coaching and tennis operations. She credits Youzhny with teaching her the importance of tailoring coaching to each player’s strengths and needs. “Mikhail showed me what it takes to run a successful tennis program and how to develop athletes in a way that maximizes their potential,” she says. His guidance influenced her coaching philosophy and leadership style, helping her build a solid foundation for her ventures in tennis.

Today, she serves as the racquet sports director at Oakland Hills Tennis Club, overseeing all tennis and pickleball programs. In addition, she founded The Hot Shot Academy, a center dedicated to nurturing young talent through innovative and personalized training methods.

Lada’s Unique Method

Baglaeva’s coaching philosophy stands out for its holistic approach, emphasizing mental resilience, physical fitness, and technological tools to help players reach their full potential.

She focuses heavily on mental toughness, which she sees as crucial for success on and off the court. “Tennis is as much about mental strength as physical ability,” she says.

Inspired by her time training under Geoff Masters, who often told her, “You have to put yourself in tough situations during practice so that when the match comes, it feels like a walk in the park.” Baglaeva incorporates high-intensity drills that simulate high-pressure match scenarios. She helps them develop the psychological resilience needed to perform at the highest levels by exposing players to these challenges in training. One of her junior players credits these techniques with helping them stay calm and focused during critical moments in competition.

Fitness is another cornerstone of her coaching philosophy. Baglaeva emphasizes conditioning programs to enhance agility, endurance, and overall athleticism. “Modern tennis demands players who are not just skilled but physically prepared for long, grueling matches,” she explains. Her structured fitness training has led to measurable improvements in speed, stamina, and endurance among her athletes.

She also integrates cutting-edge technology into her training methods, utilizing video analysis and performance-tracking tools to provide real-time feedback. “Technology allows us to instantly pinpoint areas for improvement and track progress in ways that were once impossible,” she says. These innovations have become essential in her mission to develop well-rounded, high-performing athletes.

Beyond the Court

Baglaeva’s impact goes beyond coaching, she is also dedicated to making tennis more inclusive. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, she brings the sport to underserved areas. “Tennis should be accessible to everyone, regardless of background,” she says.

Her philanthropic work with groups like Make-A-Wish allows her to inspire young players and give back to the community. ” Using tennis as a platform for growth and opportunity. “If even one child is inspired to dream big through tennis, I’ve succeeded,” she says.

A Rising Star in Tennis

Lada’s innovative methods come when the tennis industry is undergoing significant change. Since 2020, participation in the sport has grown by 15 percent in the United States, with younger players driving much of this increase. Her strategy aligns perfectly with these trends, positioning her as a leader in the field.

Baglaeva says she is honored by the acknowledgments she receives but remains focused on her work. “This recognition motivates me to keep pushing boundaries and finding new ways to improve tennis coaching and development,” she says.

Expansion Plans

In the future, Baglaeva has ambitious plans to expand The Hot Shot Academy, incorporating cutting-edge technology and reaching players worldwide. “My goal is to build a global network of coaches and players committed to innovation and inclusivity in tennis,” she says.

Beyond coaching, she is passionate about creating more tennis content to share her knowledge and inspire a broader audience. She sees the sport as a powerful tool for personal growth. “Tennis teaches discipline, teamwork, and resilience, skills that extend far beyond the court,” she says, emphasizing her commitment to making these lessons accessible to as many people as possible.

Through her innovative coaching methods and dedication to the sport, Baglaeva is shaping the future of tennis and inspiring a new generation of athletes to dream big and push their limits. Her influence, both on and off the court, will continue to leave a lasting impact.
