Janis Joplin Talks Rejection With Voice Writer Howard Smith in Last Interview Ever

On September 30th, 1970, Janis Joplin gave what would be her last interview ever, with Village Voice writer Howard Smith. The last time the two were set to speak, Joplin cancelled after Rolling Stone had written a critical piece which upset her greatly. Here, in an illustrated video from our friends at Blank on Blank and PBS Digital Studios, the two talk about that hurt, its origins, rejection in general, her love of men, and the sometimes contradictory factions of feminism. Despite the topics at hand, it’s a light and sometimes funny conversation tinged by the sad realization that Joplin’s light would go out for good just four days later.
