KURT’S SPIRIT

On November 15, 1993, photographer Jesse Frohman, who began his photography career as an apprentice for the iconic fashion photographer Irving Penn, shot Nirvana for the London Observer Magazine. The photo session began promptly with bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl showing up at the 11 a.m. call time, but their already-legendary frontman Kurt Cobain had gone AWOL. By the time Cobain did show up, three hours later, sporting red nail polish, a leopoard coat, hunting cap, and white-rimmed sunglasses that he refused to take off, Frohman had 15 minutes to complete the shoot. The result, to Frohman’s surprise, was a set of beautifully candid portraits of a lonely man in turmoil and some of the last images ever captured of Cobain before he died five months later. To commemorate the 18th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death on April 5, 1994, Morrison Hotel Gallery presents “Kurt” by Jesse Frohman, featuring the series of images from this now timeless photo shoot.
