‘Midsummer Nocturnes’

As the nights get longer, it’s almost time for Chopin season. Italian pianist Roberto Prosseda, notable for his discovery of previously unrecorded piano works by Mendelssohn, will be serving as the proverbial boatman on the River Styx for a program of nocturnes, a form best enjoyed after sunset. Though the Romanticism of Scriabin, Debussy, and John Field might turn up on a transcendental meditation playlist, don’t expect to be lulled to sleep. Some of the crepuscular impishness of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a longtime fascination for Mendelssohn, is subversively at play here.
