Pivoting to Profitability: How Syed Faiz Flexed Towards Leadership

So often it’s forgotten that career paths are rarely linear, yet many become overwhelmed and frustrated when success is not immediate. A testament to the art of perseverance and staying the course, finance manager Syed Faiz knows firsthand the challenges of staying flexible, especially when life appears to veer off the preferred path.

Starting in an entry-level data role, Faiz was able to demonstrate this perseverance, quietly delivering excellence, until his impact simply could not be ignored. He transitioned into finance operations, successfully managing multi-million dollar organizations. Now, his leadership has caught the attention across his sector, as Faiz has risen as a top performer within a fiercely competitive industry.

From the Classroom to the COVID Boom

Like many, Faiz had come to the United States to study. While he had a well-delineated path in mind, he found himself waylaid by the COVID-19 pandemic, which had stymied job growth in Silicon Valley. The dream of breaking into product management seemed to disappear before him as the job market continued to tighten and the tech industry appeared to be reporting more layoffs than hirings.

Rather than despair, Faiz pivoted, stepping towards a new path while simultaneously developing the much-needed skill of flexibility in leadership. He took a data role with Swickard Management Company, and though it was not the product management position he’d envisioned, he had the opportunity to connect with customers and drive sales strategies with those insights. It paid off professionally, and Faiz’s efforts led to better closing rates for his company and a promotion into financial management.

Data Driven Results

Faiz’s leadership has continued to earn dividends for his organization. Sales closing ratios jumped up to 28%, a company record. During his first year with Swickward, an additional 125k profit margin was netted from his efforts. With a keen eye for data, Faiz managed to improve profitability per transaction by $2,650, resulting in a $100k increase in profit.

Beyond process improvements, Faiz also learned to think strategically about how broader market forces could be used to his advantage. When federal tax credits for vehicles were set to be eliminated and tariffs created uncertainty in the automotive market, he framed these shifts as reasons for customers to act quickly.

By positioning his company’s offers with a “buy now before costs increase” message, he was able to drive urgency, strengthen sales activity, and boost profitability at a time when many dealerships were slowing down. That combination of data-driven decision making and real-world awareness has become one of his defining strengths: not just analyzing numbers, but connecting them to customer behavior and market conditions to create tangible business impact.

Through a combination of technical knowledge and financial strategy, Faiz has boosted profitability, using data to optimize in the automotive industry. Staying adaptable enabled him to look beyond Silicon Valley and into a sector that needed his skills and leadership.

Leadership Lessons Learned

As Faiz has received recognition for his leadership within the automotive industry, he reflects on the pivot that made it possible and acknowledges that flexibility is a key part of his success. Working through uncertainties and limiting beliefs was imperative to building a career. He acknowledges that, starting out, he had tunnel vision, narrowly focused on a single path to success as a project manager.

Once he took his self-imposed blinders off, however, that is when the path seemed to fall into place before him. Faiz developed processes that worked for him, starting with small, attainable goals and achieving them. He stopped looking at others’ versions of success and focused on what might be best for him instead. And things started to click.

As seasoned leaders can relate, few things in life are constant aside from change. Faiz learned that lesson, along with how to pivot gracefully into challenging, satisfying work that allowed him to demonstrate his own leadership abilities. While everyone’s path to success may well look different, embracing change might just be the best way to navigate that path.
