Sissy Spacek Was a Pop Singer! (Music Below)

by

We all know Oscar winner Sissy Spacek as Carrie, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and the co-star of this year’s gritty rural drama Get Low.

But in 1968, she called herself Rainbo and sang a pop ditty titled, “John, You Went Too Far This Time” — a hallucinogenic screed against Beatle John Lennon and his lady love Yoko Ono for appearing naked on the cover of their latest experimental album.

Sissy’s in good voice, I’m happy to say, but the song is pretty hazy, with a few too many mood changes as it tries for a “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” kind of swirl.

When the single bombed, Rainbo was promptly dropped from the label, but she ended up doing better than a lot of other Sissys I know. In fact, she’s one of the long-standing treasures of my cinematic life!

By the way, I learned this tidbit from the new memorabilia book John Lennon, Life Is What Happens by John M. Borack, which I have on my shelf next to my Playbill from Carrie, the musical.
