Stacy Smith didn’t just build a business; she created a movement. As the founder of Stacy Smith Studiosand a professional fitness competitor, she has carved out a niche that’s as personal as it is powerful. With over 15 years of experience behind the lens and two pro cards in competitive fitness, Stacy’s advancement in the world of fitness photography is defined by empathy, artistry, and a fierce commitment to making clients feel seen and confident while ensuring that their achievements are captured and celebrated.

But where did this journey begin? “I have always been obsessed with documenting life,” Stacy reflects. “I grew up in a family where we valued photo albums. We looked through them constantly. It’s always been about preserving the little moments.”
That instinct, to capture and preserve, set the tone for her business. What began as casual portraits and weddings evolved into a full-time profession by 2013. By then, Stacy had already opened her first studio space and left behind her last bartending shift, though she credits that bar for giving her a vital networking launch. “It wasn’t just a side job,” she says. “It was where I met so many of the people who would go on to support my work and become clients.”
But what sets Stacy Smith Studios apart is not just the quality of the photos; it’s the experience. “It doesn’t matter how good the photos are. If the client had a bad experience, they won’t come back,” she says. “My job is to guide them, make them feel comfortable, make them feel seen, and to make sure they get what they want out of our time together. That’s how I’ve built relationships that last years.”
And last, they have. Stacy has become the go-to photographer for families whose journeys she has followed from engagement shoots to weddings and then maternity portraits and newborn sessions. “Some of my clients have been with me for 15 years,” she says. “I’ve photographed every major life milestone for them. That’s what I love most, being a part of their story.”

But there’s another story that defines Stacy’s journey: her role in fitness photography. It began not behind the camera, but on stage.
In 2017, after leaving a difficult relationship, Stacy redirected her energy toward fitness, not only for physical strength but for emotional healing. She joined a group fitness gym, trained relentlessly, and entered her first competition on her 34th birthday. “It was something I had wanted to do for over a decade. And when I finally did, I won the whole show,” she recalls.
That moment sparked a new chapter, one that would merge her passions. “The gym started referring me to other competitors for their photoshoots. That’s how it began. But I saw an opportunity to take it further,” she says. As a two-time pro-card-holding fitness competitor herself, she brings unmatched insight to capturing the discipline and grace of the sport.
Stacy began traveling across the country, connecting with fitness federations and offering tailored photography services for athletes. Today, she is an official photographer for multiple federations and books dozens of private shoots with athletes during major shows. She shares: “I love being part of their journey. Fitness competitions are emotional. You push yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Capturing that achievement for someone is extremely powerful.”
Empathy and understanding are her edge over others in the industry. “I’ve been on that stage. I know how it feels. I know how your brain is foggy from weeks of dieting. You need someone to guide you. And that’s what I do,” she explains.

She’s also mindful of the gender dynamics in the industry. “There are so many incredible male fitness photographers. I’ve learned from many of them,” Stacy clarifies. “But for new competitors, especially women, there’s often an elevated level of comfort when working with another woman. And being a competitor myself adds an additional layer of relatability.”
It’s this blend of technical skill and emotional insight that makes her work stand out. She emphasizes lighting, posing, and client guidance, especially in fitness portraits, where showcasing one’s physique requires expert technique. She says, “Lighting is key. You need dynamic lighting to highlight muscle tone with contrast. And posing? That’s everything. People don’t know what to do in front of a camera, so I guide them. That’s part of the experience.”
Stacy doesn’t just take photos; she builds confidence and makes sure people are having fun in the process. “After the hard part is done, and the blood, sweat, and tears that you poured into this have finally come to fruition, what’s next? Now, it’s time to have fun,” she states. Her leadership is quiet but resolute, focused on service and excellence. It’s what has made her studio one of the most trusted names in the New England region, and what keeps her schedule packed with weddings, portrait sessions, and fitness bookings.
“Photography gave me a life I love. Fitness gave me strength and confidence. And blending those two gave me purpose,” she says. Stacy Smith’s story is a testament to how passion, when pursued with vision and heart, can evolve into something far bigger than a career; it becomes a calling.
