The financial world has long been shaped by structural inequities — from the boardrooms of investment banks to the pitch decks of startup founders. In industries where connections and pedigree often overshadow innovation and merit, Tanya Montmean is leading a bold charge to change that.
Having witnessed these disparities firsthand — as one of the few women navigating billion-dollar deals on Wall Street, and later as a fintech entrepreneur — Montmean has dedicated her career to rewriting the rules. Today, she’s building StartLinkVentures, a platform that connects promising founders from emerging markets with the capital and networks they need to scale.
But her mission didn’t start there — and it certainly doesn’t end there.
From Piano Recitals to Wall Street Deals
Raised in a family that envisioned her future on a concert stage, Montmean (born Tatyana) seemed destined for life as a classical pianist. But even as a teenager, her heart was elsewhere.
“At 16, I was more fascinated by stock trends than sonatas,” she recalls. “Convincing my family that finance was my true calling was my first negotiation — but not my last.”
Montmean followed that instinct to a decade-long career at J.P. Morgan, where she specialized in complex transactions across leveraged finance, M&A, and project finance. Her portfolio included projects like the Brebemi Toll Road in Italy, where she crafted a creative debt package for greenfield infrastructure, and a controversial attempt to reshape European football’s financial model through the European Super League.
Despite her success, a pattern emerged: she was almost always the only woman at the table.
Pushing for Inclusion From the Inside Out
That underrepresentation wasn’t lost on her — and it pushed her to act. Montmean joined the executive committee of J.P. Morgan’s “Women in Banking” initiative, serving for five years in both London and New York.
There, she championed efforts to elevate female voices within the firm. From creating direct dialogue with top executives like CEO Jamie Dimon to expanding mentorship and professional development opportunities, her work shifted the initiative from a support group to a career accelerator. One pivotal move? Involving men as allies to drive systemic change.
The results spoke volumes: during her tenure, promotion rates among women — especially into senior roles — rose by 25%.
Turning Frustration Into Fintech
Despite thriving at J.P. Morgan, Montmean was increasingly drawn to entrepreneurship — and the opportunity to solve deeper funding gaps. Inspired by her father, a self-made entrepreneur who struggled to raise capital due to a lack of traditional credentials, she decided to help founders like him navigate the system.
She pursued a Global MBA at Hult International Business School in San Francisco, where she deepened her expertise in finance and innovation. That led to co-founding ClimateKick, a blockchain-powered investment platform that made it easier to fund climate and circular economy projects.
“Our goal was to merge traditional and decentralized finance to fund real-world impact,” she explains. Using asset-backed tokens, ClimateKick offered an innovative approach to sustainable investing and helped redefine how Web3 could drive environmental change.
StartLinkVentures: Building a More Inclusive Future
Montmean’s latest venture, StartLinkVentures, is the culmination of years of experience across finance, fintech, and entrepreneurship. It aims to bridge the divide between underserved startup ecosystems and the capital-rich world of Silicon Valley.
By leveraging AI to streamline and personalize the fundraising journey, the platform empowers founders with actionable insights and gives investors access to ventures they might otherwise overlook. It’s more than a tech tool — it’s a new model for inclusive capitalism.
“Great ideas don’t just come from Stanford dorm rooms or Palo Alto garages,” Montmean says. “They come from everywhere — we just need to build the bridges.”
Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders
Outside her entrepreneurial efforts, Montmean remains committed to lifting others as she climbs. She leads the Finance Club at Hult, mentoring aspiring women in finance and helping them navigate investment strategies, leadership, and growth.
Her long-term vision includes launching her own VC fund focused on AI, Web3, deep tech, and impact-driven startups — a fund that mirrors her values of equity, innovation, and access.
“From Wall Street to Web3, every step of my journey has deepened my passion for empowering bold ideas and overlooked voices,” she says. “Now, my focus is on building the future — and making sure it’s one everyone can take part in.”
Tanya Montmean isn’t just succeeding in an inequitable system — she’s redesigning it. With every venture, she’s expanding the definition of who gets to innovate, lead, and win.
In doing so, she’s not just climbing the ladder — she’s building a whole new staircase.
