At about 2 p.m., a half hour before the 2005 inaugural parade got underway, the D.C. riot cops finally make their grand entrance. Here they stand on J Street, near 14 Street, where the general public waited up to two hours to pass through secured checkpoints to get to a designated protest area by the parade route. According to CNN, the D.C. police got down to business not long after I took this picture, unloading tear gas on several dozen protesters who hurled trash and snowballs at the officers.
