A party sponsored by Hot 97 at midtown hot spot MARS 2112 erupts in gunfire, injuring two bystanders.

A shoot-out in front of Hot 97’s Hudson Street headquarters—during which at least 20 rounds are fired—wounds bystander EFRAIN OCASIO, 31, leaving a bullet in his back. Police link the shooting to a disagreement between LIL’ KIM and CAPONE-N-NOREAGA, who had allowed Kim’s rival FOXY BROWN to insult her on the group’s new CD.

Morning DJ STAR apologizes on air for mocking singer AALIYAH‘s death the day before with a sound effects tape of a woman’s screams followed by a loud crash. Hot 97 management suspends him indefinitely less than a week later; he returns to the air on September 10, 2001.

DJ ANGIE MARTINEZ plays a new JAY-Z track entitled “Super Ugly” in which the rapper takes aim (again) at rival NAS, referring to a relationship with the mother of Nas’s child, crowing that he “left condoms on your baby seat.”

NAS, scheduled to perform at Hot 97’s Summer Jam, suddenly refuses to go onstage because the station won’t allow him to hang an effigy of JAY-Z. Incensed, he heads to rival station POWER 105.1, where he brands Hot 97 an “evil empire.”

Hot 97 DJ FUNKMASTER FLEX is arrested after allegedly slapping DJ STEPH LOVA of Power105.1 over a damaging interview weeks earlier accusing Flex of payola. He pled guilty to harassment.

LIL’ KIM is charged with perjury concerning her grand jury testimony about the February 25, 2001, shooting outside the Hot 97 studios.

SUIF JACKSON, said to be a bodyguard of LIL’ KIM‘s, is sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the February 2001 Hot 97 shoot-out.

Hot 97 morning DJ MISS JONES premieres the “Tsunami Song.” The parody, sung to the tune of “We Are the World,” refers to “screaming chinks,” “Chinamen,” and child slavery. It’s pulled off the air less than a week later, after protests from listeners, politicians, and civil rights groups.

Hot 97 fires morning show personality TODD LYNN and producer RICK DELGADO over the “Tsunami Song” controversy. DJs MISS JONES and ENVY and production assistant TASHA HIGHTOWER all receive two-week suspensions.

A man rumored to be a member of 50 CENT protégé THE GAME‘s crew is shot in the ass during a melee right outside the Hot 97 lobby. Minutes earlier, 50 CENT had announced on the air that he planned to drop THE GAME from G-Unit. The same evening, shots ring out in front of the midtown offices of VIOLATOR MANAGEMENT, which represents 50 CENT.
