Obies 1961

A standing-room-only audience on Saturday afternoon saw the chief honors of the off-Broadway season split between “The Blacks” and “Hedda Gabler.” Anne Meacham as Hedda was named Best Actress this year for the second time. She won her first Village Voice Off-Broadway award – an “Obie” – in 1958 for “Suddenly Last Summer.”

Khigh Dhiegh was selected Best Actor for his performance in Brecht’s “In the Jungle of Cities.” Jean Genet’s “The Blacks” was cited as the year’s outstanding play. Drama critic Jerry Tallmer of The Voice co-ordinated the event, which was held at Art D’Lugoff’s Village Gate. Congressman John V. Lindsay led off the afternoon with a discussion of the intellectual and cultural climate of the city. A bright highlight of the occasion was an interlude of skits by “The Premise,” another “Obie” winner.
