Sandwiches from Blue Dog Cafe (101 West 25th Street, 212-229-9222), $5.95-$9.95
The vegetable-loaded sandwiches at this Chelsea cafe will help you kick off your New Year with a meal that won’t immediately ruin your health-related resolutions.
We’ve long since abandoned committing to hardcore diets come January 1 — not only do our jobs prevent it, we also have enough self-awareness to recognize we’re never gonna stick to a strict food regimen no matter how desperate we are to lose a few pounds. But we do like to take the first couple of days of the year to reset, packing in a few more vegetables than usual, if only to detox from the month-long holiday binge in which we just participated. So we seek out spots like the Blue Dog Cafe, a Chelsea eatery that has expanded into a Midtown location. The board here is packed with wholesome options that won’t break the bank, from the egg white and avocado breakfast sandwich (available all day) to the eggplant and pear sandwich, which is supplemented by spinach and hummus and griddled on focaccia. If you’re not particularly interested in detox, you’ll find more indulgent items on the list, too: See the bacon and brie or the strawberry and Nutella.
