Hold Your [Bobble] Head High as NYC Starts Fresh with Zohran Mamdani

A Mamdani bobblehead might just help boost those hope vibes.

Zohran Mamdani's bobblehead will be popular everywhere in NYC — except maybe Staten Island, the only borough Andrew Cuomo won.

Want a souvenir of New York City’s invigorating November 5 mayoral election? A limited-edition bobblehead of the city’s first Muslim, South Asian mayor, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mumdani, will do nicely, and last longer than your “I Voted” sticker.

Mamdani, 34, was educated in the New York City public school system and will be the city’s youngest mayor in a century. A member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, representing the Queens neighborhood of Astoria, he advocates for affordability measures aimed at making daily life better for everyday citizens. Mamdani lit up the jaded electorate and activated the youth vote, leading to the highest voter turnout since 1969, with more than two million ballots cast.

That election sticker will inevitably be lost or tossed after it’s posted on your social media or stuck on a coffee mug or your dog’s head. But you could set a Mamdani bobblehead on a stereo speaker, turn the volume up to 11, listen to “Head Held High” from that quintessential New York band the Velvet Underground, then find a recording of the mayor-elect’s acceptance speech and nod, along with your new acquisition, to some of his best lines:

While we cast our ballots alone, we chose hope together. Hope over tyranny. Hope over big money and small ideas. Hope over despair….

As has so often occurred, the billionaire class has sought to convince those making $30 an hour that their enemies are those earning $20 an hour….

If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump; it’s how we stop the next one.

So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!…

New York will remain a city of immigrants: a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant….

Together, New York, we’re going to freeze the…. [Crowd: rent!]

Together, New York, we’re going to make buses fast and…. [Crowd: free!]

Together, New York, we’re going to deliver universal…. [Crowd: child care!]

Let the words we’ve spoken together, the dreams we’ve dreamt together, become the agenda we deliver together. New York, this power, it’s yours.

This city belongs to you.
