The pain started as a whisper. A dull ache in the morning, a fog that settled over her thoughts by afternoon. For years, doctors dismissed it, offering counseling, antidepressants, or disbelief. When Tami Stackelhouse finally received a diagnosis—fibromyalgia—she was told the same thing countless patients hear: “There’s not much we can do. You’ll just have to get used to it.”

She refused to accept this grim prognosis.

Fibromyalgia isn’t rare, but it could be considered invisible. Affecting one in thirteen women, it’s one of the most under-researched conditions in medicine. Fibromyalgia is a complex neurological condition that affects how the brain and nervous system process pain. It causes widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disruption, and cognitive challenges often known as “fibro fog.”

Because its symptoms overlap with many other conditions, and there are no definitive  lab tests to detect it, patients can go years without a diagnosis or effective care. Yet a quiet revolution is forming, led by patients-turned-advocates who are rewriting the narrative of what healing looks like.

At the center of that movement stands Tami Stackelhouse, founder of the International Fibromyalgia Coaching Institute (IFCI) and host of the #1 Fibromyalgia Podcast®, which has reached nearly three-quarters of a million downloads across more than 170 countries.

What makes Stackelhouse remarkable isn’t just her professional success, but how she has transformed personal adversity into a global movement.

Once disabled by fibromyalgia herself, she built a framework for recovery that blends science, compassion, and lived experience. Her Fibromyalgia Wellness Framework™ has since helped thousands reclaim their health, confidence, and quality of life, with many experiencing measurable improvements in pain and energy.

Stackelhouse shares, “I created the program I wish I’d had when I was first diagnosed. When you live with fibromyalgia, you’re told to lower your expectations. I wanted to prove that it’s possible to feel better and live fully, even with this chronic illness.”

From those early beginnings came the foundation of the International Fibromyalgia Coaching Institute, a training hub that has grown into the world’s only certification program for becoming a Certified Fibromyalgia Coach® and Certified Fibromyalgia Advisor®. Nearly a decade after its founding, IFCI has graduates in ten countries, speaking multiple languages, each helping others navigate their own path to wellness. Together, they’re doing what traditional healthcare rarely has: providing individualized, informed support for the millions living with fibromyalgia.

Stackelhouse’s impact extends far beyond education. She is the executive producer of the feature documentary INVISIBLE, a raw exploration of life with fibromyalgia.

She’s also the visionary behind the Fibromyalgia Wellness Summit, a free ten-day virtual event offering expert-led insights and practical strategies through a private podcast format. These summits invite patients to hear directly from those who’ve improved their symptoms and reclaimed their lives. It’s a testament to her belief that “healing happens through hope and knowledge.”

“Every speaker featured in the Summit has fibromyalgia and has found ways to feel better,” she says. “They’re not just talking about theory. They’ve lived it. It’s not about false promises; it’s about sharing what works.”

That blend of empathy and expertise has made Stackelhouse a trusted voice in a field too often defined by skepticism. Despite fibromyalgia affecting over twenty million Americans, research and awareness lag far behind other chronic conditions.

Stackelhouse says, “Fibromyalgia affects seventeen times more people than rheumatoid arthritis, yet RA has seventeen times the research published. That gap is unacceptable, and it’s why awareness is so critical.”

In September, for Pain Awareness Month, Stackelhouse also launched FibroCompass.com, a new educational blog designed to help patients “find their direction and reclaim their lives.” Featuring practical tools, mindset strategies, and patient-centered guidance, the blog extends her mission of empowering those with fibromyalgia to navigate daily challenges with clarity and hope.

Her advocacy doesn’t stop at education. Through IFCI, Stackelhouse and her team partner with organizations such as the U.S. Pain Foundation, the Swiss Association for Fibromyalgia, the European Network of Fibromyalgia Associations (ENFA), and the German Fibromyalgia Association.

In 2025, their combined efforts resulted in official state recognition through governor proclamations for Fibromyalgia Awareness in 27 states. Many recognized May 12th as “Fibromyalgia Awareness Day,” and other states celebrated the entire month of May as “Fibromyalgia Awareness Month.”

For Stackelhouse, these efforts aren’t about accolades; they’re about representation. “When patients see their state or country recognizing fibromyalgia, it tells them they’re not forgotten,” she says. “It’s a small act that creates enormous hope.”

That hope has become her signature. In an industry sometimes dominated by quick fixes and false cures, Stackelhouse stands out as a thought leader grounded in both authenticity and evidence. She doesn’t promise overnight transformations, but she’s built a global community proving that progress is possible.

Today, her work bridges the gap between patients and professionals, compassion and science, illness and empowerment. Her podcast continues to grow. Her institute continues to train new leaders. And her message continues to ripple across the globe: you can have a great life, even with fibromyalgia.

Stackelhouse explains, “We can’t wait for someone else to fix this for us. We have to lead the way by educating ourselves, by supporting each other, and by believing that better is possible.”

For millions still searching for answers, that belief is more than a message. It’s a movement.
