Gilles Peterson is one of the few DJs who inspire other DJs, thanks to his impeccable and varied taste in music. The man most responsible for bringing acid jazz to the public, Peterson never stopped at one genre—along the way, he also championed drum’n’bass on his seminal Talkin’ Loud label, putting out releases by Roni Size. In a very rare, and long overdue, NYC appearance, the British tastemaker spins a four-set in celebration of the release of his latest mix compilation, In Brazil. The Ghostly International posse is back, this time bringing its new shining star, James T. Cotton, whose record The Dancing Box can’t be filed neatly in that little blip-and-bleep techno corner. There are truly huge barnstormers that make you wish for the days of massive raves, just so you could stand in the middle of the dancefloor with 3,000 kids going bonkers to the record—not quaint, and not for the faint of heart. Also playing are Ghostly cats Kill Memory Crash, Todd Osborn, Ryan Elliott, Mike Servito, Derek Plaslaiko, and Audion (Matthew Dear in disguise) at the party, which also serves as Ghostly label honcho, Sam Valenti IV’s birthday celebration. Techno, electro, and post-disco dance maniacs; Overdose (Viewlexx/Bunker Records); Dirty Jean (Cazzo Pazzo), Cowboy Mark (the Crucial Get Down); and organizer Lisa Hsu spin at a brand-new loft space in Williamsburg.
