RouRou Café Has Taken Over the Old Cupcake Stop Spot

When the Cupcake Stop closed earlier this March, owner Richard Kallman claimed he would reopen the cupcake pedding company’s Greenwich Avenue shop and that the brand would rival Crumbs for sweets supremacy within the next five years. Well, plans for that store appear to have died. It’s since reopened as RouRou Café (70 Greenwich Avenue, 212-627-0200).

RouRou Café specializes in baked goods, sandwiches, quiches, and cookies — though you’ll also find boxes of the Cupcake Stop’s mini cupcakes, perhaps as a concession to the space’s former tenant. The cashier, however, told us that they are in no way affiliated with the Cupcake Stop. While the paninis skew Italian, the pastries are classic French, including butter-filled items like éclairs, financiers, mini madeleines, and tarts, plus obviously macarons, because how can a bakery open today and not sell macarons? A range of coffee drinks rounds out the menu. Seating is limited, although there’s a bench outside where you can nosh on your croissants. To see the full renovation, visit RouRou Café’s Facebook page.
