Upstate Video Blackjackers Pop a Metalcore Boner

One night about a year and a half ago I kicked it with the young men in Buffalo-based metalcore outfit Every Time I Die for a magazine profile. Niagara Falls was out, but inside one of several neighborhood drinking establishments we hit they did introduce me to the wonders of a popular new pastime—not blackjack, not video blackjack, but video strip blackjack. Guitarist Jordan Buckley must be the video strip blackjack champion of Buffalo; his pixel-to-quarter ratio could make a grown man long to be a member of a Buffalo-based metalcore outfit.

Judging by the sound of Gutter Phenomenon, Every Time I Die's Viagra boner of a third album, Jordan has redoubled his game: They've finally figured out how to make the extreme-metal equivalent of a naked lady writhing atop a Corvette. Songs present as sleazy riot-gear riff parades sprinkled with Jordan's brother Keith's lyrical ticker tape, which fights the good fight against coherence. (From "Guitarred and Feathered": "Our legs are spread wide open, our weary heads are splitting at the seams/And we all know you're proficient in the idioms of grief.") Like all things screamo, the music's got nothing to do with sex. But then neither does a naked lady writhing atop a Corvette.
