I agree with Melissa Andersen. It seems unsurprising that in the hands of Disney, the Muppets would lose its freshness and just become another tired attempt to satiate the (unfortunate) renewed public interest in musicals. This felt like 'Muppets do Glee.' It seemed like they were really straining to introduce the Muppets to a new, younger audience, but the way to do this is not by whoring them out with lazy, charmless pop numbers which pander to the lowest common denominator. The best way to introduce people to the Muppets is simply by letting the Muppets be themselves. A new caper would have been vastly more enjoyable than this ghastly variety show.

No. Just no.

"The handful of serviceable new songs composed for the film by Bret McKenzie includes the requisite execrable rap."
Not entirely sure how "serviceable" songs can also include something "execrable"

I'd just like to note, the chickens didn't perform "Forget you". They performed an original work "Cluck-oo" (or maybe some other Cee Lo song that rhymes with that.
Honestly, I don't understand the criticism for including current popular songs AND criticism for older top 40.
The "moldy talents" you refer to were not moldy in the 1970's

As much as Segel wants to be the wolrd's foremost Muppet fan, he just doesn't get it. Muppets do NOT do fart jokes. Muppets do not live in mansions. Muppets do not suggest imagining people naked (after all, Kermit, Rowlf and Fozzie never wear clothes, unless it's a costume.) Also, the Henson Muppet movies were primarily about Muppets. This movie is about Segel...he has top billing, after all. It's a nice and loving piece of fanfic, but misses the mark.

Wow. No wonder people fucking hate New York hipsters. What a bunch of cynical assholes.
-
11/28/2011 5:58:00 AM
Sadly, I agree with a lot of the comments here. There's a difference between a movie that is desperately trying to win the approval of the audience any way it can think of in order to be hip and a movie that is so hip that it doesn't need to.

It's the Black Friday Muppets. The shameless premise is to bring the franchise out of mothballs and sell it to the public again -- and they make no bones about it. The emotional climax is -- spoiler ahead -- when the public embraces the Muppets again. Kids in the audience weren't responding to the jokes -- and my six-year-old laughed once, at a fart joke.

wow... I though that even the urban hipster-cynics lording their superior understanding of what an appropriate muppet movie sensibility should be could hang up their egos and enjoy some well intentioned fun for a hot minute...and yet...

This movie so vigorously pats itself on the back, ("Hey, look! We made another Muppets movie! Isn't that great?"), to the extent that the nostalgia is practically shoved down our throats. This movie makes you feel warm and fuzzy, but goes about it in a self-aware way; that good feeling is not incidental to the strength of the story or the lovableness of the Muppets themselves, but an obvious objective from the start. I think in that way it betrays a true fan; why not let the greatness of the Muppets stand on its own?
That being said, I think Jason Segel and the others deserve some credit for, yes, bringing an all but forgotten franchise back into the limelight. And there were some funny moments! (Jack Black notwithstanding). But I too will be watching The Muppets Christmas Carol to remind myself how funny the (original) Muppets really are.
-
11/25/2011 10:12:00 PM
Although I laughed out loud and it was nice seeing my old friends. I felt like the movie was forced and had poor pacing. At times I was wondering when the movie was going to get on with itself.
The villain rapped. I was not happy that I had to watch.

Nate 11/25/2011 7:23:00 PM
I couldn't agree more. This long-time Muppets fan was incredibly disappointed. This felt like embarrassing, lazy, amateurish fan fiction, not the sharp, zany humor folks like Jerry Juhl used to impart to the Muppets. Time to wash my mind clean of this shipwreck of a film and watch The Muppets Christmas Carol for the 25th time.
-
mzemmaful 11/25/2011 4:31:00 PM
I fully agree with this review. I kept waiting for the movie to "get on with itself". Instead, it just kept pandering to the nostalgia factor in the self-aware manner that seems to pervade comedy these days. Save that for Hangover-type movies where I want cynicism in my humor but don't destroy my muppets. The few times I actually enjoyed the movie was the scenes that exclusively featured the muppets talking, conversing, etc. but these were cut short and too few and far between and I couldn't help but feel the poor muppets were only guest stars in their own movie. A shame.

billyjoe 11/25/2011 1:44:00 PM
I kind of got the feeling there was an Emperor's New Clothes-type ring to most of the reviews of this movie. Thanks for telling us point blank what many critics are obviously afraid to, lest they lose access to future Disney press junkets and screenings.
-
11/25/2011 1:21:00 PM
Bravo, somebody who actually saw the movie chimes in. The movie sucked point blank... If u grew up watching the Muppet's or have any admiration for Jim Henson's master piece than you would know this movie missed the mark. Were the Muppet's even in the movie? Usually I don't write in, but I read to many positive reviews from people who obviously did not see the movie. Please boycott, and rent the old Muppet movies for you and yours. I'm 31, was raised on Muppet's, this was terrible. Worst remake ever, my kids were ready to go asap. I'm sorry I made them watch it. I cant mention one memorable scene from the movie nothing heart felt just a lame way to kill a classic.

mjm 11/25/2011 12:42:00 PM
I heard that Kathy Griffin, Ricky Gervais and Lady Gaga's cameos were cut.
does Disney not like edgy? (well, Gaga did kind of make a peace offering with that Thanksgiving special...)

Chunkmayl 11/25/2011 3:35:00 AM
THANK YOU Melissa and Dr. Hollywood too. You both hit on what frustrated me about this film. It wasn't terrible by any means, and I did have plenty of laughs but this film didn't capitalize enough on what worked well and there was lots of extraneous stuff that bogged it down.
The stories about what the old Muppets crew were now doing (Fozzie in a third-rate Reno "tribute" show, Gonzo the toilet magnate, Scooter at the Googleplex) were GREAT. So they "cut it short with a montage." Jack Black is a funny guy for physical homor, why the hell would you want most of his performance bound and gagged? Amy Adams was charming but she could have been cut from the entire film and none of it would have mattered. The ending was sloppy as was mentioned.
The old Muppet Shows and the first Muppet movie were rapid-fire puns and jokes and breaking the fourth wall and manic goofiness. Walter and Gary and Mary didn't give us that, and the rest of the crew offered a taste but it could have had so much more...Of the humans, only Chris Cooper really came close to the ideal (if you ignore the awful rap...)

Wow, what a grinch. You must have written the first and only negative review for this movie. Really, get some perspective, there IS a reason people are responding with so much enthusiasm to a movie with no gimmicks, just heart -which you apparently don't have.

What about it, stupid? Is that the film we're talking about here?
-
DMiller 11/23/2011 11:05:00 PM
Miss Anderson,
I do believe that you have no soul. I enjoyed this movie completely and in its entirety. It was a welcome break from the sheer stupidity that has become children's programming and even movies. It was light hearted, goofy, and not preachy. There was not any over the top violence, and thank the powers that be, Spongebob was nowhere in this movie.
This movie was not intended to be Oscar material, not to be a thought provoking political thriller, not a special effects infused nerdfest, and defenitely not a thriller/supsense film.
It. Is. The. Muppets.
So, please sit back, eat your popcorn, and go back to your hooty tooty coffee shops in the Village where angry, out of work, D List poets recite crappy prose.
Of course, that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong. But not likely.

Either I dont understand you, or you have never watched the Muppets... They always had popular guest stars of the time do brief cameos and made "Muppet" versions of current popular songs on The Muppet Show... They used almost the exact same format... This is more of a "behind the scenes" version of the muppets. Is seems like you are one of the only people in the world who just doesnt seem to get it...

I think The Muppets movie is better than so many other movies coming out. The Muppets have a real heart, this review seems from someone that does not understand what the Muppets are really about. What Jim Henson did was give life to these puppets, their is a reason why they been on for over 50 years. What actor can say that. The movie was fantastic.

Dr. Hollywood 11/23/2011 4:11:00 PM
First honest review I've read of this movie. I saw it last week and was VERY disappointed. I give points to Segal for his earnestness in trying but so many things are off that I wondered if he had ever even SEEN a muppet movie or was he too busy doing the press rounds telling everyone how much he loved them. The new muppet Walter upsets the balance of the movie by making HIM, not Kermit and company the focal point of the "drama". The regular muppet characters are ultimately, supporting characters. The songs are not the bouncy, clever creations of Paul Williams or Joe Raposo, but rather the sloppy-unmemorable-unmelodic-too-hip-for-the-room work of Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords. The rap is so bad, that only a "follow the bouncing ball" gag makes it fun for the kids. Amy Adams' solo number in the diner was awful and forgettable (and without muppets!) The plot was verging on the incomprehensible and where's the ending? I mean, I heard people were walking out of the theatre asking if they had actually saved the theatre. I thought, wow...I actually don't know the answer. Sloppy, sloppy writing. I admit I laughed at a lot of the jokes, but ultimately, it was a highly disappointing movie.

Marauder 11/23/2011 2:25:00 PM
I have to agree. This has got to be the most overrated movie of the year - the century, maybe. I was all hyped up and then very let down. Opinions differ, of course, but one gets the idea that a lot of movie critics WANT so badly for this movie to be good that they wrote less-than-honest reviews. Nostalgia is more blinding than rose-colored glasses, it seems. The Muppets is not very good. Arthur Christmas was a much better film. In my opinion.

11/23/2011 8:51:00 AM
As much as I love The Muppets, always have, always will, I'll be the first to admit that the franchise has had its ups and downs. Still, I'm interested in seeing this for myself, I'd love to see them gain some momentum from this and make a comeback.
