More About

Director Kirby Dick doesn't actually stick his camera under any Capitol Hill bathroom stalls in the new documentary Outrage, but his goal is more or less the same: to catch conservative, family-values politicians with their pants down. Armed with a chorus of incriminating voices from across the alternative press and the corridors of state and federal government, Dick sets out to spill the beans on gay elected officials living in the closet. Call it yellow (or is that pink?) journalism if you must, but as Outrage persuasively argues, it comes not to invade its subjects' personal lives, but instead hold them accountable for their hypocrisy. It outs so that it can, in turn, rage against these Janus-faced men of the people (and they are all white men) who play to their Christian conservative base while lobbying for another sort of approval in gay bars, chat rooms, and public toilets.

This isn't the first time Dick has raided the wardrobes of America's moral guardians, having previously taken on the Catholic Church sex-abuse scandal in the Oscar-nominated Twist of Faith (2004) and the double standards of the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board in the jaunty This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006). In each case, Dick approaches his subject with little of the self-righteous effrontery of Michael Moore or Bill Maher, instead maintaining a modicum of objective distance and even mustering a certain sympathy for both the accuser and the accused. If anything, he's almost too tactful, so that while Outrage is clearly meant as one more flaming arrow fired into the GOP's perforated hull, everything is packaged so smoothly and tastefully that you can almost imagine Republicans thanking Dick for alerting them to their own party's traitorous elements.

The film presents a mixture of mostly extant innuendo with some new wrinkles. Opening with audio of Idaho Senator Larry Craig's unconvincing police interview following his 2007 arrest on sex solicitation charges in a Minneapolis airport bathroom, Dick surveys a series of other headline-grabbing closet cases, including Virginia Congressman Ed Schrock, who resigned in 2004 after leaving voice messages on a gay phone-sex line; New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, who left office the same year after confessing (under pressure) to his homosexuality and an affair with one of his male staffers; and former New York City Mayor Ed Koch—the only prominent Democrat outed in the film—whom gay activist David Rothenberg accuses of having ditched his longtime boyfriend for the more powerful aphrodisiac of political power. Among sitting politicians, the most insidious claims are leveled against California Congressman David Dreier and Florida Governor Charlie Crist, the latter of whom has been bandied about as a 2012 Republican Presidential candidate.

Like the Beltway blogger Michael Rogers, who provides lively color commentary throughout, Dick positions himself as something of a reluctant witch hunter, less interested in his subjects' sexual orientations than their voting records, nearly all of which (save for Koch's, a fact that gets somewhat lost in the movie's shuffle) reveal strong anti-gay-rights stances. He also accuses the mainstream press of a "brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy" designed to perpetuate the double lives of gay politicians, producing a smoking gun in the form of a Larry King Live episode censored following its initial broadcast to remove Bill Maher's outing of Dubya campaign manager Ken Mehlman. That's partly because even the reporters who cover Capitol Hill are light in their shoes, Outrage claims, wagging its finger of shame at Fox News' Shepard Smith before one of Dick's subjects suggests that D.C. may be a "gayer" city than San Francisco.

Among the film's more compelling testimonials, the always quotable Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank and former Governor McGreevey speak to the liberating effects of coming out, while McGreevey's ex-wife makes a candid appearance as Outrage's only on-camera "beard." For a dollop of historical perspective, Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner shows up to invoke the specter of Roy Cohn. Finally, Crist emerges as the film's tragic fool—at once deplorable and pitiable—pulling a mystery girlfriend (whose revealing brush-off message to the filmmakers gives the movie one of its juiciest bits) out of his hat when he is mentioned as a possible McCain running mate and, later, is seen with his eyes fixed on the bigger prize, getting hitched (to a different mystery woman).

Moment by moment, Outrage proves duly provocative, well sourced, and almost certain to go more viral than swine flu. But Dick's film only strikes its most resonant note just before the final fade-out, as Crist and bride Carole Rome descend the steps of a St. Petersburg chapel in a kind of Orwellian vaudeville—the very embodiment of the infernal entanglement of church and state and our collective desire to believe in the white-picket surface of things. By abetting—even encouraging—their doublethink, Outrage implies, we are living in the closet, too.

Did it ever occur to you that some people are understandably ashamed to be gay? Why? Because they know they were born abnormal and have funny sexual desires. Evolution designed the penis as a reproductive organ to be complementary with the vagina. Though people have sex for pleasure, the real meaning behind sex is reproduction. In other words, there is a specific meaning behind sex EVEN IF people usually have sex just for pleasure. Evolution designed the anus too for a specific purpose. Excretion. It's where the crap comes out. It's the Peeeeewwww hole. Just look at the toilet tissue after you wipe it. Is it any hole to be shoving a penis into? Let's not be Victorian, puritanical, or repressed now. Don't lact ike you're sooooooo digusted by what I'm describing. I'm ONLY describing the factual detail. If you find it gross, it's only because the act is gross. Anal sex is disgusting for the penis and it's unhealthy for the anus as well. Just ask Farrah Fawcett. And, do tell me the meaning of squirting the life juice of sperm into a tunnel filled with feces? We exist on this planet--both straight and gay people--because our fathers squirted their life juice into the right holes, THANK GOD!! So, gay sex is funny business. It is gross. Among lesbians, it's just ridiculous but not physiologically gross. Between men, YECHH!!!! No, this is not 'homophobia'. Phobia is an EXTREME IRRATIONAL FEAR OF SOMETHING HARMLESS. My reaction to gay sex is rational and natural. Gay sex is irrational and unnatural. So, what are you gonna tell me? That gays love one another, and what's wrong with love? I have no problem with love between men. It's the lust that is ewwwwwww. Fathers loves sons, brothers love brothers... but suppose they lusted after one another? Ewwwww!! Next, are you gonna tell me that gays were born that way? I agree. Gays were born that way. So, does that mean homosexuality is natural? Yes, but it's a natural dysfuction, not a natural norm. Some kids are naturally born blind or deaf, so should we 'celebrate' such in the name of 'diversity'. WOW, LOOK, MY SON WAS NATURALLY BORN WITHOUT LIMBS. WHOOPIE, LET'S CELEBRATE LIMBLESS PRIDE AND DIVERSITY!!! Ridiculous. Look, I feel sorry for people born with dysfunctions, defects, or deformities. I recognize their humanity and want them to lead happy lives. I feel that way about gays too. I don't want people calling gays 'faggots' or beating them up. I don't want individuals who are gay to be discriminated in jobs or housing because of their sexual (dis)orientation. That said, I still say gayness is not normal. It is a natural dysfuction where sexual biochemistry is all messed up. So, you have people with the bodies of men but feelings tending towards the feminine or vice versa. And, then you have some people who are so screwed up that they undergo grisly and grostesque sex change operations(where a part of their belly flesh is cut out and rolled into an artificial penis!) (I wonder when race change operations will be available, as more and more whites want to be black.) Anyway, I can understand why some decent gay people wanna stay in the closet. They were born with funny desires that carry no kind of dignity. I mean how can anyone really be proud of saying, "Hi, my name is Eugene and my idea of sex is shoving my penis into a fecal hole." It's one thing to feel such desires and act them out behind closed doors, but why show them off? Suppose some Congressman took special pleasure in dressing up in girl's underoos. I say let him do it behind closed doors. Why publicly declare that sort of thing? Also, what is this crap about gay conservative politicians gays pushing legislation that is anti-gay? Gays have full rights in this country as individuals. Why should they have special rights as gays? Why is opposing special-gay-rights an act of injustice against gay individuals? Also, who says the Gay Agenda People speak for all gays. Does AIPAC speak for all Jews? Does NAACP speak for all blacks? Does the Iranian government or Alqaeda speak for all Muslims? Does the NOW gang speak for all women?Does La Raza speak for all Hispanics? Does the KKK speak for all whites? The notion that a politician is 'anti-gay' or out to hurt gay people SIMPLY BECAUSE HE OPPOSES THE OFFICIAL GAY AGENDA is ridiculous!!! What kind of arrogance is this? There are many conservative gays who want freedom as individuals but want no special rights as gays. They believe that their gayness is their personal business and no one else's. Heck, I have no problem with such gays. I leave them alone, and they leave me alone. But the gay cabal is an intolerant bunch. Worse, they think there can never be any shame in being gay. OF COURSE, THERE CAN BE SHAME IN BEING GAY. Some people feel this shame and for good reason. So what if they do? So what if they have some decency. Suppose pedophila was innate, which is to say pedos were born with it. Isn't a pedo who feels shame over his feelings more decent than a pedo who thinks it's great to want to have sex with children? (Now, I can just hear NAMBLA perverts asking, 'but in this world of so much hatred and violence, what's wrong with loving children?' Again, the problem isn't love as I love children too. The problem is LUST.) Of course, as gay unions involve grown-ups, it is more acceptable than pedophilia, and it shouldn't be made illegal. But, I can understand gays who feel ashamed for having the feelings they do. Heck, if I were a male who happened act and talklike a girl and wanted to suck other guys and sodomize them with my penis, I'd be ashamed too. Where is the PRIDE in this? Do tell me. The way I see it, gays are not a problem most of the time because, like everyone else, they don't act sexual in public. Straight or gay, people cover up their sexuality at workplace, and so it ought to be no problem for straights to work with gays at jobs or whatever. Also, other than their funny sexual behavior, gay people can be good people in most respects. They can be good neighbors, nice to dogs and cats, and helpful and kind. And, that's why I say LEAVE THE GAYS ALONE(if they leave you alone). In contrast, one can be sexually normal but be a bad guy in other respects, so I would not say a gay person is all bad and a straight person is all good. But, on the issue of sexuality, a gay dude is really screwy. It's really gross. I mean think about it. A sexual organ going into a fecal hole and unloading sperm into a tunnel of waste material. Is that sick or what? Pride? Gays take pride in this? There is one area where gays may indeed take pride, and that is in culture, art, and fashion. The funny biochemistry of gays seem to be productive at least in certain endeavors. Similarly, neurosis or psychosis can aid creativity(which is why so many great artists were funny in the head). Anyway, even though we can agree that homosexuality and mental maladies can fuel creativity, they are still abnormalities which, on their own, are not healthy for the most part. I know all of you have been raised by Politically Correct Dogma peddled mostly by liberals in the media and academia. You drones have been brainwashed that 'gay marriage' makes sense though it's the biggest stupidity ever contrived by radical idiots. Even most straight white males have been castrated and lobotomized by political correctness, and they think morality and virtue is proving 24/7 that one is not a 'racist', 'sexist', 'fascist', 'homophobe', 'xenophobe', 'anti-semite', 'islamophobe', and etc. Yet, such people are normophobes who've been corrupted by a mainstream culture taken over by the PC gang. It's because you guys don't have the kind of pride you really need. Pride as white people, pride as Western people, pride as straight people. Instead, you feel it's inherently shameful to stand for normal, healthy, rational, and moral values and virtues. You've been so brainwashed by radical egalitarianism that you think all cultures or all orientations are of equal value or worth. Well, if homosexuality is the equal of heterosexuality, how come not a single human being was created by a penis ejaculating inside an anus or by two vaginas grinding all night long? Seriously. Explain that. You see, I'm a very tolerant person. I say let gays be gays. They were born in a funny way, so let them do their funny business behind closed doors. But, gays should leave us alone. They should not push their funny behavior before our eyes or into our sphere and demand that we all recognize that gayness or gay behavior is the EQUAL of ours. Similarly, I say let certain people practice witch doctor medicine, but I also say such people have no right to demand that our medical institution accept and recognize their practice as LEGITIMATE medicine. I also say let Creationists believe that dinos and men co-existed 10,000 yrs ago. They have a right to be goofy. But, they have no right to demand that Science classes in schools accept it as LEGITIMATE science. Not all things are of equal value. Radical egalitarianism is crap. Ours is a free nation where people can pursue their own idea of happiness. That doesn't mean that all pursuits are of equal value nor should be recognized as such by our government, institutions, and by us.

I can't agree that gay people who vote against gay rights are necessarily hypocritical, and that makes me uncomfortable with this film. I don't believe we send people to Washington to vote their own conscience -- if I did, I would never vote for a Catholic! Instead, I believe they are there to do what their constituents ask them to do. If constituents tell their Catholic Congressperson to be sure abortion rights are retained, that is what they must do. And if a population of anti-gay constituents refuses to endorse gay marriage, well...
