Last Friday I ran into the director of our local film festival. She’d seen the trailer for “We Steal Secrets.”
“I don’t understand it,” she said. “Gibney was our best documentarian. How could he make such a piece of…propaganda?”
“Universal paid him two and a half million dollars.”
“Even the title is dishonest,” she said. “It’s meant to make you believe WikiLeaks steals secrets.”
“After ‘Taxi To The Dark Side,’” I said, “ The government was near as scared of Gibney as it was of Assange. So they played them against each other: let’s you and him fight.”
