OnlyFans is a top-performing, content-sharing platform that provides content creators and their subscribers a place to interact and, of course, send and receive various digital media.
Any individual can post their own adult XXX content to OnlyFans for the world to see and pay for. But how does it work and what makes it stand out?
We cover everything there is to know about this site, from how to sign up and use OnlyFans, to how much a creator can earn, and much more.
OnlyFans is a site that serves as a platform for content creators and their fans to share and view media such as video and photo content.
This site was originally meant to provide creators and their followers a general platform where any and all sorts of content could be shared. But OnlyFans reached its peak popularity due to its 18+ content (in other words, porn) in particular.
We won’t hold it against you if you thought each and every OnlyFans page sells nothing but pornographic videos and photos. The majority of the content creators belong to this category after all. You’d be mistaken, though, to think that OnlyFans is exclusively made for porn.
OnlyFans’ accounts and pages also include various personalities in the fields of music, fitness, video games, modeling, and so on.
Founded in 2016 by Timothy Stokely, OnlyFans has become the leading content-sharing platform today, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, as more creators and fans discover the site every day.
As it stands, there are more than a million creator pages on OF and around 50 million subscriber accounts following their favorite personalities, and the list keeps growing.
There isn’t a way to determine the exact percentage between NSFW and SFW OnlyFans pages. An educated guess would estimate that between 70 and 80 percent of accounts belong to the adult content category and around 20 to 30 percent to SFW content.
However, with the rise of celebrity OnlyFans pages since 2020, which are more inclined to provide diverse media outside of the porn category, the percentage of NSFW accounts could be closer to 60 to 70 percent.
The main reason an exact estimate is difficult to achieve is that new creators pop up every day (around 5,000 daily), with each of them providing a wide array of products. This includes XXX photos and videos to more family-friendly fare such as fitness guides and music.
These creators range from small businesses to bona fide celebs looking for a content-sharing platform to sell their digital products.
Pretty much anyone can use OnlyFans. However, there are a few trends that you’ll notice when looking at this platform.
Let’s start with the fans. They’re the majority of OnlyFans users. To keep things short, OnlyFans, well, fans use the platform to subscribe to and follow their favorite personalities. These fans range from teenagers to middle-aged folks, including males, females, and everything in between.
Going to the content creator side of things, back in 2016, there was more diversity between the OnlyFans accounts and pages, with a better balance between NSFW and SFW content creators.
However, not long after this, independent porn and XXX adult content creators composed the majority of OnlyFans accounts. These users ranged from nude models to amateur porn creators who sold their content on the platform.
2020 saw a boom for OnlyFans, thanks to the pandemic, and the various travel restrictions and lockdowns that occurred.
During this period, established porn stars and adult entertainment personalities started to use OnlyFans as one of their main platforms to make money and provide content that would have been sold elsewhere, had there not been any restrictions in place.
Soon after, mainstream celebrities got on the OnlyFans bandwagon to use the site as a place where they could provide exclusive content for their followers, for the same reasons as their pornstar counterparts.
These celebs and personalities who have OF pages also use the content-sharing site to provide their fans with content that they’d otherwise be unable to produce and sell through their studios and production companies, or other content-sharing platforms. This is mostly NSFW stuff that isn’t allowed at other sites and marketplaces.
OnlyFans works in a couple of ways:
Creating an account with OnlyFans with the sole purpose of following any given content creator and subscribing to their page is free and easy. All you need is a working email address, and you have to answer a few basic questions from the site to create your account.
Additionally, you’re going to need to link up your Visa or Mastercard to the site if you want to avail of paid content from your favorite creators.
As with fans, creators who want to use OnlyFans to share or sell their content can create an account with the site for free. After which, creators are then required to set up their page.
Here, they can determine whether they want to provide their fans with free or paid access to their account, along with the option to offer their followers additional, more premium content that they can sell separately.
The site has a 20 percent service charge for any and all transactions that creators make. As such, OF content creators get to keep 80 percent of the cut from their earnings. Payouts are made through Visa or Mastercard transactions, and on a bi-weekly basis.
Additionally, OnlyFans is well aware that people mostly use the platform as a porn site alternative, which is why they ask would-be creators for identification to verify that they’re aged 18 and above.
NOTE: Regardless if you’re a content creator or a fan, OnlyFans only accepts Visa and Mastercard payments until now.
Top OnlyFans models earn over $1 million every month from the combined revenue of their subscription fees and the various additional content they sell to their fans separately.
Looking further, 73 percent of the total site revenue on OnlyFans goes only to the top 10 percent of creators on the platform. This means that the remaining 90 percent of creators, which mostly include small businesses and independent content creators, share 27 percent of the site’s entire revenue.
Prepare to dispel your idea that all OnlyFans creators earn thousands of dollars each month just by showing some skin online. In truth, the average OF creator—regardless if they provide NSFW content or otherwise—earns a pauper’s portion of what the top pages do.
Based on recent surveys, the average content creator on OnlyFans earns around $180 per month off of their fan subscriptions alone. As far as average earnings go overall, most OF pages earn anywhere between $0 and $5000 monthly, depending on their subscription prices and the number of paying fans they have.
This, however, excludes additional revenue that comes from separate products and offerings that any given creator sells on OF, as well as the tips they receive from their subscribers.
If you plan on being a creator and making money through OnlyFans, then the first thing you must do is, of course, set up a creator content account with the site. You don’t have to pay anything when creating your account, though you’re going to need some form of identification so the site can verify if you’re aged 18 or above.
After that, make sure that your Visa or Mastercard has been linked to the site, so you can easily process your payouts once they’re ready. Don’t worry, OnlyFans doesn’t charge anything here as well.
Once that’s done, you have to decide what kind of OnlyFans page you want to run. There are a couple of options here.
You can provide your fans and subscribers free access to your general content. In this case, you’re going to make money from tips and separate payments for exclusive content that you provide your followers.
On the other hand, you can also set your OnlyFans page to have a subscription fee, which can be a minimum of $4.99, to a maximum of $49.99 per month. Doing so doesn’t affect your ability to sell other products to your subscribers or receive tips from them.
It’s a good practice for any OnlyFans content creator to set fan expectations right from the get-go. You can do this by giving potential visitors to your page a clear idea of what kind of content you provide your subscribers. Your OF page’s “about” section should contain whether you offer NSFW or SFW content.
Now, when it comes to the exact kind of media that you’re going to provide, there are three primary options you can choose from: photos, videos, and post updates.
With photos, you can create single photo content or full image sets. This is pretty much one of the standard products an OF creator sells to their followers. Videos, while seemingly more complex and labor-intensive, are also popular. In this day and age populated by zoomers, creating TikTok-length video content is a viable option.
Lastly, post updates are, by far, the easiest thing to provide your fans. These posts simply require you to get on your keyboard and type a message that you’ll then post to your OF page. This offers a way to entertain your fans and encourage them to take part in your sellable offerings.
There are four ways to make some income from OnlyFans:
1. Subscription fees
As a creator, you can set a subscription fee that your fans have to pay on a monthly basis. The minimum amount you’re allowed to charge is $4.99, and the most is $49.99 per month.
2. Product-specific purchases
Product-specific, or content-specific, purchases are a great way for you to gain income, apart from OF’s subscription fees. This can be in the form of exclusive content, like videos or image sets, as well as live cam shows, and more. Additionally, you can also offer personalized and customized products to your subscribers. The payments here are done using OF’s tip system.
Of course, with a tip system, OF allows its fans to send tips to their creators. These tips are either used as payments (see: product-specific purchases above), or as gratuities. Regardless, OF will take 20 percent of the tips you receive. Additionally, there’s a $5 minimum and $100 max. for tipping.
4. Paid messages
Paid messages are similar to product-specific purchases in that they’re also paid for by fans using OF’s tipping system. However, instead of content, paid messages are DMs (direct messages) that fans send you, along with a tip to ensure that you’re going to reply to them.
This is perhaps the most important thing to learn when becoming an OnlyFans creator since a wider audience means a larger number of prospective subscribers to your page, and potential buyers of your content.
To do so, you have to be active on social media outside of the OF platform. That means you need to maintain a strong presence on sites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Take your cue from other OF content creators and use your other social media accounts to provide your followers with teasers and previews of what you offer on your OF page.
And most importantly, don’t forget to link your OnlyFans page to all your social media accounts. OF doesn’t have a search function, so this is invaluable if you want your fans to find your OF account and, ultimately, have them subscribe to your page.
Especially if you provide free subs to your OnlyFans page, finding a way to boost your earnings on the platform is a priority.
Make use of all the available tools, like providing your subscribers with paid exclusive content, and selling personalized ones as well. Take advantage of the paid message feature, and though you can’t really rely on these as a source of income: earn those tips.
Additionally, don’t limit yourself to digital content. Other successful OF content creators have gone on to sell their fans physical products on OF, or by using the platform to link to their respective online web stores. There’s no reason you can’t do this, too!
Below we answer some of the top questions about OnlyFans, from curious minds like you:
Yes, it is safe to use OnlyFans. In fact, OnlyFans is one of the safest and most secure content-sharing sites available right now, especially when it comes to providing and receiving adult content.
For one, OF has features that disable any form of screen capture or recording when viewing content made by the platform’s creators. This ensures there’s very little chance of your work being pirated.
Additionally, OF has a department that actively seeks unauthorized parties who share content without their creator’s permission, with the aim of shutting them down and, in extreme cases, litigating said parties.
As a fan, your data and financial information are safe within the OF database. Also, each and every transaction you make on the platform is legit, as both creators and fans adhere to the site’s terms and conditions to ensure both consumer and seller protection.
Yes, you can stay anonymous on OnlyFans, but it’ll require some work on your end. OnlyFans doesn’t have a specific feature that allows you to be incognito. However, you can edit your username and other page details to remain anonymous to other users.
Whether you’re a fan or creator, you’re still going to need to key in your real name if you’re setting up your Visa or Mastercard as a payment method. Don’t worry, though, because no other OF users can see this info.
